I started this strip way back in 2007. The offending catalysts being Webcomics Weekly and the start of an seemingly interminable University program. The strip itself was the exact amount of effort, routine and creative independence I needed to keep me sane during those years.
I didn’t have much planned out when I started. In fact, all the characters save Neiko were just random designs I threw up on deviantArt before all this had even taken root. But from the start, I always wanted this to be a strip that I’d never really seen anywhere else, a strip that’s nearly impossible to “sum up”, and as sort of a slight to all the contrived plots I had seen in all media, I wanted every character to be a reasonable human being.
Even though the strip was never all that popular, or profitable, I don’t regret any of it. I’m still not exactly where I’d like to be in terms of art and writing, but looking at where I was when this started, I know I’d never gotten as far as I have without this pushing me to create week after week.
This is something I want to make clear: It isn’t that the strip has no life left, or that I’ve simply done all I care to do with these characters. It’s that the present structure of my life just isn’t conducive to producing it. That might not be permanent, and if it isn’t, there’s still a lot of places I’d love to take this comic.
So, yeah. The strip is stopping, but I wouldn’t be too quick to call it “done”.
You might be wondering what I’m working on next, or you might have puzzled it out from my tweets these past months. I’m making an independent game. If all goes according to plan, you’ll be seeing it on Steam sometime next year. As for the game itself, think Portal, but 2D; that’ll get you roughly the right shape. If that interests you, the best way to follow along the development is my twitter feed.
So thanks, all of you. It’s been a treat.
